Hailing from New Jersey by way of New York City, HINNA is a Berlin-based electronic artist who relocated to the German capital 7 years ago. Bleeding Gold is a product of Hinna's 2020, exploration of creativity via production amidst the havoc of the year on the globe. "The process of creativity is something I’ve been exploring for the last few years and during the production of Bleeding Gold," she says, "How to make the creative process productive whilst keeping it energizing."
She describes the EP as "cloudy post-storm, fairly warm, with the sun just beginning to break through." It’s a playful extension of Hinna’s DJing, which was her initial endeavor into the electronic scene in 2019.
The melancholy of “Lahore” is represented by the storm, with “Cajón” as the sun shining through bringing brightness to the EP. “Lahore” is a moody drive down Hinna’s street, deep into her personal cul-de-sac. The song uses a recording from the first video transmission on Pakistani television - the words an unremembered nostalgia for Hinna whose only connection to her blood is through lineage.
“Cajón” is an ode to classic house in arrangement & keys flavored with cajón rhythms and percussion. Using the classic Korg M1 to create that bright and recognizable classic house sound, listeners can hear Hinna’s journey in discovering identity in between breakdowns.
With “Bleeding Gold,” she dives into her eccentric identity closet pulling out textures and sounds from different dance genres creating something vaguely ravey, strange, and familiar, all at the same time. Recurring themes include the Korg M1, Cajón + Arab percussion, and the call-and-response motif alludes to celebration music in South Asia and Middle East.
It’s Space Adult Emo for first generation people in the West - children of immigrants - all messed up and proudly weird.
